This policy explains what information masterstudent.ca (“masterstudent”, “we”, “us”) collects when you use https://masterstudent.ca, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. masterstudent.ca is a free study and admissions resource run from Canada.
The short version
- You don’t need an account to use the site, and we don’t sell your personal information.
- The site is paid for by ads. Our ad partner and its partners use cookies and similar technology to show and measure ads.
- We use Google Analytics to see which pages are read, so we can improve them.
- When you take a practice test, we store your answers, score, the time you took it, and your IP address. We don’t ask for your name or email.
- If you comment or use the contact form, we receive what you type.
Information we collect
Practice tests and quizzes
When you complete a practice test, the quiz software records the test you took, your answers, your score, the start and end time, and your IP address. We use this to run the test, to show you your results, to prevent abuse, and to see which questions and tests are most useful. We don’t ask for your name, email address or phone number on practice tests. These records are kept for as long as the site runs, so we can keep accurate statistics on our questions.
Contact form
If you use our contact form, we receive your name, your email address and your message. These are sent to us by email so we can reply. To stop spam, the form may check your message with Akismet (a spam-filtering service by Automattic) and briefly keeps a count of messages sent from your IP address. We keep your message only as long as we need it to answer you and for our records.
Comments
If you leave a comment, we collect the name, email address and website you enter, your comment, your IP address and your browser’s user agent. Your email address is never shown publicly. Comments may be checked by Akismet for spam. A coded version of your email address (a “hash”) may be sent to the Gravatar service to see if you have a Gravatar profile picture. If you do, it is shown next to your approved comment. See the Automattic privacy policy. Comments and their details are kept indefinitely, so follow-up comments can be approved automatically.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, our hosting provider’s servers log basic technical details of each visit: your IP address, browser type, the page requested, the referring page and the time. We use these logs to keep the site secure and working.
Advertising
masterstudent.ca is free because it shows ads. Ads are provided by Journey by Mediavine and its advertising partners, which can include Google. These companies may use cookies, web beacons, device identifiers and similar technology to collect information about your visits to this and other websites, such as:
- your IP address;
- your browser and device type;
- the pages you view;
- how you interact with ads.
They use it to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure ad performance, and, where allowed, show ads based on your interests. The site also uses Grow by Mediavine for features such as saving or bookmarking content. If you sign up through a Grow feature, Mediavine handles that information under its own policy.
You can learn more and control ads here:
- Mediavine privacy policy
- How Google uses information from sites that use its services
- Google My Ad Center (turn personalized Google ads on or off)
- YourAdChoices Canada, Digital Advertising Alliance (US) and Network Advertising Initiative opt-out tools
Depending on where you live, you may see a consent message from our ad partner that lets you accept or refuse certain advertising cookies.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to understand how the site is used. For example, it tells us which pages are read, how visitors find us, and roughly where they are (country or city). Google Analytics uses cookies, and Google processes this information under its own privacy policy. We use these reports only in aggregate to improve the site. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. We also use Google Search Console, which reports how our pages appear in Google search results. It does not identify individual visitors.
Cookies
Cookies are small files saved in your browser. This site uses:
- Essential cookies, which make the site and its practice tests work.
- Comment cookies: if you choose, your name, email and website are saved for one year, so you don’t have to type them again.
- Analytics cookies from Google Analytics.
- Advertising cookies from our ad partner and its partners, described above.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Some parts of the site may not work properly without them.
Embedded content and links
Some pages include images, videos or other content from other websites. Loading that content works as if you visited the other website: it may receive your IP address, set cookies and track your interaction with it. Links to other websites are provided for convenience. We are not responsible for their privacy practices.
Who we share information with
We don’t sell your personal information. Information is shared only with the service providers that help run the site:
- our hosting provider;
- Journey by Mediavine and its advertising partners;
- Google (Analytics, Tag Manager, Search Console and advertising);
- Automattic (Akismet spam filtering and Gravatar);
- our email provider, which delivers contact-form messages.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the site, its users or others.
Where your information is stored
masterstudent.ca is run from Canada, but our hosting provider and the services listed above may store and process information in other countries, including the United States. Information stored there may be accessed by authorities under the laws of those countries.
How long we keep information
- Practice-test records: for as long as the site runs (see above).
- Comments: indefinitely, unless you ask us to remove yours.
- Contact-form messages: as long as needed to answer you and keep a record of the conversation.
- Analytics data: according to the retention settings of Google Analytics.
- Advertising data: according to our ad partner’s and its partners’ own policies.
How we protect information
The site is served only over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. Access to the site’s administration is limited and password-protected, and we keep the site’s software up to date. No website can be perfectly secure. If a privacy breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify the people affected and the authorities as the law requires.
Children
masterstudent.ca is meant for students preparing for university and professional programs. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- ask what personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct it;
- withdraw your consent;
- ask us to delete information you gave us, such as a comment or a contact-form message.
To make a request, use our contact form. Practice-test records are stored only with an IP address, not a name or email, so we may not be able to tell which records are yours.
If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. In Quebec, you can also contact the Commission d’accès à l’information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the site or the law changes. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
