UofM Medical School Requirements and Acceptance Rate

The University of Manitoba Rady Faculty of Health Sciences is one of 17 medical schools in Canada and the first medical school in the prairie provinces.

In 2021, the UofM medical school acceptance rate was 12.5%. Of the 877 undergraduate students that applied, only 110 were admitted into the program. However, the acceptance rate for applicants who applied from outside of Manitoba is smaller at 1.25%. Of the 399 out-of-province applicants, less than 6 were admitted to the program.

UManitoba Medical School Requirements: Prerequisite Courses

All students applying to the University of Manitoba Medical School must have completed a 4-year undergraduate degree by the proposed year of entry.

There are no specific course requirements for admission to this medical school. However, it is recommended that students take the following courses to prepare themselves for the MCAT. Biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, psychology, sociology, biochemistry, microbiology, and research methods.

UofM Med Requirements: GPA Calculation and Requirements

The University of Manitoba has a bias towards in-province (IP) applicants over out-of-province (OOP) applicants. The university states that a maximum of 5% of seats can be given to OOP applicants. The reason behind this choice is so that students who graduate from their program are more likely to serve the communities they studied in. As a result admission requirements are less competitive for IP applicants versus OOP applicants.

When calculating your GPA an adjusted GPA (AGPA) is calculated from all undergraduate degree courses, including summer and spring courses as well as grades from repeated courses. Up to your lowest 30 units worth of courses (equivalent to 1-full year) will be dropped from your GPA calculation.

Pass grades and credit hours will not be used in the AGPA calculation or in the total hours completed.

CASPer Test: The Canadian Professional Health Sciences test is required by this University. Only the 90-minute situational judgement test is required. This test must be taken in the language you intend to study during your studies. The CASPer snapshot will not be taken into consideration by the admissions committee.

Medical College Admission Test: The University of Manitoba must have received and verified your MCAT score by October 15th of the year of application. The MCAT must be written in the past 4-years prior to the date of application. If taken multiple times the most advantageous score to the applicant will be considered in your application. University of Manitoba Medical School References:

Upon receiving an offer of an interview three references must be provided to the University of Manitoba. Applicants should select referees who have current knowledge of their attributes and activities and who can evaluate their suitability for the study and practice of medicine. They must not be family or extended family members. It is suggested that applicants select referees that are work/volunteer, and/or academic and/or character recommenders.

Letters of reference are solely used to verify the suitability of the applicant and do not contribute to the final weighting of application decisions.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to partake in an interview with the University of Manitoba admissions team. Interview invites will be decided based on the following weighting formula:

  • AGPA: 20%
  • MCAT: 50%
  • CASPer: 30%

The format of the interview will be an MMI consisting of 12 interview stations. One of these stations will be used for a rest break and another will be used to complete a written component of the MMI.
