The Perceptual Ability Test (PAT) is one of the four sections of the Dental Admission Test (DAT) and is often one that students find the most challenging. One of the most powerful tools any learner can have is the ability to be open-minded. Put succinctly, being open-minded means having the willingness to search for evidence that may go against one’s current beliefs and weigh new information fairly and without bias. Both misinformation and disinformation are not new occurrences. They have been readily and repeatedly discussed by many organizations including the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organizatiom (UNESCO). Yet the spread of false information continues to occur, a fact that has never been more readily apparent than during the COVID pandemic, and more recently the war in Ukraine. In 2020, the United Nations highlighted this issue stating how “Unreliable and false information is spreading around the world to such an extent, that some commentators are now referring to the new avalanche of misinformation that’s accompanied the COVID-19 pandemic as a ‘disinfodemic’.”
Throughout the pandemic fear of the unknown spread incorrect information so prolifically that governments and corporations were forced to intervene. In its aftermath, many people have called for governments to increase regulations on corporations to curb this problem. While it is true that having more transparency and accountability on corporations will help there are things that each and every one of us can do to help prevent the spread of misinformation.

Rejection is painful. It can make you feel overwhelmed, ashamed, or even threatened. Regardless of if the rejection came in the form of a relationship, university admission, or something else, we suddenly become unsure of what to think about ourselves. We often focus on the past and believe our future is bleak.
But by letting rejection consume us we are not allowing for the nuanced internal discussion of our strengths and weaknesses that allow us to improve. If it goes on for too long we also allow it to negatively impact all aspects of our personal life.
Rejection is an inevitable part of life that we will all face at one point or another. By appropriately dealing with rejection we can overcome the pain, learn from our mistakes, and persevere.
