University of Utah Dental School Requirements: Prerequisite Courses

All students applying to the University of Utah Dental School must have completed at least a minimum of 3 years of study (90 semester hours / 120 quarter hours). Students must also complete the following prerequisite courses listed below:

*A semester credit hour is an academic unit earned for fifteen 50-minute sessions of classroom instruction with a normal expectation of two hours of outside study for each class session. Typically, a three-semester credit hour course meets three 50-minute sessions per week for fifteen weeks for a total of 45 sessions. AP accepted for electives if the credits are transferable toward a bachelor’s degree. However, it is recommended to take courses beyond introductory classes waived by AP.

Community college credits are accepted for prerequisites and electives if the credits are transferable to a four-year institution.

Pass/Fail grades or Credit/No Credit will be accepted for the 2021-22 cycle.

Applicants are required to take the DAT. If an applicant has completed the DAT more than once the super score on the DAT (highest of all sections) will be assessed when calculations are made.

Three (3) letters of recommendation are required by applicants.

  • Two letters from science instructors who taught you in a classroom setting and assigned a grade
  • One letter from a college/university committee, a non-science instructor, dental professional, employer, supervisor or clergy member
  • If desired, you may submit an optional fourth letter attesting to character and fitness for the profession of dentistry
